Film Poster Analysis 1

The poster I have decided to analyse is The Others. I chose to analyse as this poster as it is similar to my film as it is a supernatural film, as well as the target audience for this film being women. The poster is a main poster for the others. The poster has a very conventional layout as it feature a main image, the name of film, a tagline, the name of the main actor and credits.

The camera shot used for the poster is a medium/close-up, this is to show the characters facial expression and body language. The women facial expression suggests she is scared as neck bones are showing; this could show that she is gasping her mouth is slightly open showing her clenched teeth. Her eyes are to the side as if she is looking of her shoulder.

The main image shows the woman is wearing a ring on her finger and a chain around her neck. This indicates is married and probably well off to able to affording jewellery.  The woman is holding a lamp; this suggests the time period that the film is set in oil or gas burning lamp were used during the war.

The lighting in the poster is very dark; the background is completely black, as well as part of main image. Profile lighting used on the main image to show the women face.
Black is offended used on horror posters Light only shines on one side of women’s face. This suggests that she might ‘have a dark side’ or have a dark secret she is hiding. Black also suggests that the woman is isolated. The lighting purposes the women is battling against the.

The exaggerated darkness of the background kindles the characters alienation. The articulation on the woman’s face is one of menacing fear, as her eyes stare intently into the darkness. Her mouth appears to be slightly open exposing a set of clenched teeth; this provides an air of strength to the character, as it constructs an image of her fighting back her apprehensions and confronting her fear. The exaggeration of the darkened background emphasises the isolation, the anxiety and the anticipation in which she fabricates.

The target audience of this film are predominantly female, the age bracket from mid twenties to late forties, It is also aimed at an older audience of mature women who like Nicola Kidman as an actress. The film poster features names of the main actor, Nicole Kidman which is well known and a celebrated actor means that potential audiences will be attracted to the film just because she is in it.

The tagline reads “sooner or later they will find you” This gives the audience more of an insight of what the film is about. This suggests why the women in the main image looks frighten, as she is hiding from someone.

In conclusion, I believe that this film poster is effective as it  persuade the audience to want to watch the film because it doesn’t reveal too much and it keeps the audience wondering what the film is about It is a successful film poster, as immediately the audience are able to identify the genre the  film bellows too. Due to the use of colours and main image.
